Los Angeles International Airport (LAX)
Location: The airport is situated 15 miles (24km) southwest of
Los Angeles .
Time: GMT -6 (GMT -5 from the first Sunday in April to the last
Sunday in October).
Facilities: Passenger services at the airport include ATMs and
currency exchange, a business centre, baggage storgage, shops, restaurants and bars.
Internet kiosks are located throughout the airport and the Travel Right Cafe in
Terminal 4 has laptop connections.Cell phones can be rented in Arrivals. Facilities
for the disabled are excellent.
Parking: There are six central car parks offering long and short-term
parking that are connected to the terminals by the LAX shuttle bus.
Misc: Before the 1930s, existing airports used a two-letter abbreviation
based on the weather station at the airports. So, at that time, LA served as the
designation for Los Angeles International Airport. But, with the rapid
growth in the aviation industry, the designations expanded to three letters, and
LA became LAX. The letter X does not otherwise have any specific meaning in this
identifier.Portland International Airport in Oregon also has a similar code: PDX.
"LAX" is also used for the International Port of Los Angeles located in San Pedro
and for the Amtrak-serving Union Station in downtown. All three along with the Atlanta
(ATL) and Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW) designations have become culturally eponymous
and are often used in shorthand as an indicator of identity by local residents.
