population was estimated to be 17,294. This college town, located 280 miles
(450 km) north of San Francisco, is home to Humboldt State University. As of
the census of 2000, there were 16,651 people, 7,051 households, and 2,813 families
residing in the city. The population density was 1,812.1 people per square mile
(699.6/km²). There were 7,272 housing units at an average density of 791.4/sq mi
(305.5/km²).
