Georgia - Savannah

Savannah, Georgia’s emblematic city is situated on the Savannah River, a few miles upstream from the Atlantic Ocean state coastline. It revels in stereotypical southern charm and old-fashioned hospitality, inviting visitors to stroll back in time, right to 1733 when British General James Oglethorpe first founded the city on a bluff above River Street.

One can wander past stately mansions and sip mint juleps under moss-covered oaks as you soak up Savannah’s old world grace, kept very much alive in the city’s historic district, one of the largest preserved historical urban areas in the United States. Apart from hundreds of architecturally significant buildings Savannah is also not short on restaurants, shops (particularly fine antique stores), Civil War forts, museums, art galleries, parks and nearby beaches. The city has a well-earned nickname as ‘the Hostess City of the South’.

Situated in the north of Georgia’s ragged stretch of coastline, Savannah is the perfect jumping off point for exploring the scenic barrier islands, resort towns and inlets that characterise the coast. Of course it is also imperative to sample some of the world-famous shrimp that is caught and cooked in a myriad of ways in this region.
